Easy Envelope Pillow Cover Tutorial

I can’t believe the weekend is already over! It goes so fast. Another busy week ahead…I have a week and a half left in summer school and then two weeks off before the fall semester. I’m looking forward to the fall semester. I’m taking a creative writing class. It should be fun!

I’ve done a few more things to my office. It’s finally starting to come together…like a year later!! I decided on the colors for the room. I was going to go bright and fun, but I was looking for fabric at Hancock Fabrics and I came across these two pretty designs in the bargain bins – $5 a yard! I considered using them in our bedroom, but they really work in my office. They compliment the colors in the dining and entry and my office is right off of those rooms.

I bought enough fabric to make pillow covers and curtains. They had a ton of the stripped fabric, but only a couple of yards of the floral print – just enough to make a couple of pillows. (plus one other mini project I haven’t finished!)

Envelope Pillow Covers

I love pillow covers. They are so easy to make and if I decide to change the colors in a room, I can just swap them out. If you can sew a semi-straight line, you can make a pillow cover. I’m going to give you the steps to make an 18”x18” pillow cover.

Cut your fabric. 46” long will allow for a 6” overlap at the back of the pillow.

Hem the short ends of your fabric. I like a wide hem, so I measure a 1” hem.

Next you want to fold your fabric into a square – the print will be on the inside.

If I have a specific pillow I’m using, I will measure it to fit the pillow. Otherwise, you can fold one side over 12” and then overlap the other end by 6”. This will make a perfect 18”x18” pillow. (I covered one of the “lovely” pillows that came with our sofas.)

Pin your sides. I just use a couple of pins to hold it together.

Envelope Pillow 5

Sew up the sides – 0.5” from each edge.

Turn it right side out and you’re done!! Just 4 straight lines!!

Stuff your pillow in it and enjoy!

I found this cute little bird pillow at Ross to go with them. Just a few more finishing touches and I can call this room DONE! (for now anyway!)
